Amazon.co.uk Review The third film in the The Mummy series freshens the franchise up by setting the action in China. There, the discovery of an ancient emperor's elaborate tomb proves a feather in the cap of Alex O'Connell (Luke Ford), a young archaeologist and son of Rick O'Connell (Brendan Fraser) and his wife Evelyn (Maria Bello, taking over the role from Rachel Weisz). Unfortunately, a curse that turned the emperor (Jet Li) and his army into terra cotta warriors buried for centuries is lifted, and the old guy prepares for world domination by seeking immortality at Shangri La. The O'Connells barely stay a step ahead of him (climbing through the Himalaya mountains with apparent ease), but the action inevitably leads to a showdown between two armies of mummies in a Chinese desert. The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor has a lot to offer: a supporting cast that includes the elegant Michelle Yeoh, Russell Wong, and Liam Cunningham, the unexpected appearance of several Yeti, and a climactic battle sequence that is nightmarishly weird but compelling. On the downside, the charm so desperately sought in romantic relationships, as well as comic turns by John Hannah (as Evelyn's rascal brother), is not only absent but often annoying. Rarely have witty asides in the thick of battle been more unwelcome in a movie. Rob Cohen's direction is largely crisp if sometimes curious (a fight between Fraser and Jet Li keeps varying in speed for some reason), but his vision of Shangri La, in the Hollywood tradition, is certainly attractive. --Tom Keogh
still entertaining, but the "Mummy" has crossed its peakDecember 30, 2008 K. van Amelorde(Berlin, Germany) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
We watched the third of the "Mummy"-movies over Xmas.It was still quite entertaining, teh special effects rather good, but really it has lost its specific attraction. It went the route of "India Jones" by introducing the son who slowly takes over. The new leading lady (Maria Bello), Rachel Weiszis is not as good and remotely funny as the orginal one(Rachel Weisz) And Mr Fraser...it seems that he is bored by it all. Except for displaying his great body he adds nothing specific to the movie. All in all we were not bored, but one could have easily done without. One kind of hopes that the indication of more "Mummy"-movies (further mummies have been discovered in Latin America)will not come true. Let the Mummy finally rest.

I really loved the first two Mummy films so couldn't wait to see this third installment. Having watched it, I have to say it was very disappointing. I wanted to see action and good effects, which certainly do come and thats why I gave it two stars, but the bits in between "I've been a bad father/ son blah, blah, blah" go on forever and drag the film straight down to the point of utter boredom. And sorry Maria Bello (Evelyn), but your "oh so perfect" English accent just grated to the point of me wishing you would just be quiet and look pretty. It all could have been so much better and why leave Egypt?? It's long rich history could have easily provided for a better film than this...and was Emperor Han really a "Mummy" anyway? This is the second film to ride on the successes of the first two, the other being "The Scorpion King" which left you feeling just as empty as this offering. Finally, the little teaser at the end of the film "shortly after, Mummies were discovered in Peru", which I guess gives a clue to the next film, instilled no excitement in me whatsoever. I can now see why Rachel Weisz turned this down.
shame...December 28, 2008 Mr. G. A. Williams(Hereford, England.) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
a fairly poor film. following on from the original Mummy which was not a terrible film, and returns which was also ok.. this is terrible. The acting isnt great (i dont like Brenden Fraser anyway), no real good action scenes and the Story line is extremley predictable.
The Actor who played Alex (the now grown-up son) i dont think played the role very well, he had an american accent for some reason, and generally didnt suit the role imo.
If you really want to watch it i would rent it or borrow it off a friend... not worth buying unless its in the sale for around 2!

It's 1947 and the O'Connell's have retired. Rick (Brendan Fraser) is trying to take up fly fishing. And Evelyn (Maria Bello) has a case of writer's block trying to come up with a third book to follow her two best sellers based on their two adventures with mummies. Truthfully, the two are bored out of their minds. Which is why they are thrilled to be offered a chance to take a rare artifact to China.
The trip also gives them a chance to visit Evelyn's brother Jonathan (John Hannah) who owns an Egyptian themed nightclub called "Imhotep."
Unbeknownst to them, it's also the current location of their grown son Alex (Luke Ford.) Alex has just uncovered the ancient burial ground of Emperor Han (Jet Li) an ancient Chinese Emperor who, if awakened, will attempt to take over the world.
Naturally, the next thing anyone knows, the emperor is awake. Can the O'Connell family figure out a way to stop their latest mummy?
This movie doesn't have the atmosphere the first one did. There just isn't the sense of foreboding the permeates the entire thing. And the story is predictable, especially if you've seen the first two.
But it is fun. There are some great action sequences and impressive fights. The special effects are top notch yet never feel like they get in the way of the story. And there are several laughs. The best were in the previews, but my favorite involved our first shot of Evelyn, played here by a different actress then the first two.
My only real problem was a rather significant plot hole. At least I think there was one. The story was moving so fast that either they forgot something major or explained it to us but I missed it.
No, this is not great cinema. But it really isn't trying to be. It's a fun way to kill a couple of hours, and if that is what you are looking for, you won't be disappointed.
MUMMY MORE LIKE DUMMY!!!December 19, 2008 Jason Thorne(England / Oxford) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I liked the first two films infact they were brillant as for this it was dire. The acting was very average again compared to the first two films I really hope the director doesn't get the offer to do another film because I don't think he was really bothered making this in to a good part 3 and he still got paid!!!. It is worth a watch to say you have seen all three films but do not think you are going to get what you saw in the first two films because you won't!!
