I'm going to wait another year for Seagate to fix this "clicking" issue. December 13, 2009 Alan Gurling (London) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
So I bought this hard drive since I've been happy with my 3.5" 500GB Freeagent Desktop. I've been reading everywhere that 1.5TB drives have a pretty HIGH failure ratio so I'd settle for the next big thing which was this 1TB.
I didn't go for the most popular 3.5" 1TB drive in Amazon at the moment (Western Digital) just because it uses a printer cable, and I was hoping it would have at least used a Mini USB socket.
Amazon's quite excellent as I received it quite fast, next day delivery as I was going on holiday in a few days. I had several 2.5" HDD's I had to archive before going on leave.
Luckily I "copied" the contents and not "moved" it otherwise I'd lose several years worth of work!
The Seagate Expansions 1TB External Desktop USB 2.0 Hard Drive FAILED me in less than a day from opening. The sound I could hear and FEEL was reminiscent of those failing hard drives I used to replace over a decade ago back when I was working as a freelance Geek Support Delivery Service.
Oh, I guess I'm not the only one finding out that the 1.5TB drives are the same as these 1TB drives. Same built and parts, only one less platter.
Good product December 13, 2009 T. Mikulasko (Manchester, UK) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I purchased this item as a replacement for an older iomega 500gb which was incessantly dropping connection. After transferring first few gigs I was particularly pleased with how silent the unit was. Very very low rustling, hardly noticeable. My iomega sounded really loud in comparison.
The sleek black design of the unit makes it very pleasing to behold. To my surprise, it even appears to repel dust somehow, as it sits next to my also glossy epson printer and there is always a significant difference in dust cover.
Size and weight are in the norm of this kind of equipment, though it will make a considerable addition to the weight of your backpack if you ever decide to travel with it.
On the performance side, can't really comment more than saying that it's working excellent so far. Speed of transfer is limited to the USB maximum so there is virtually no or very little difference among various external hdd models in this respect.
There is a small green diode next to the seagate logo on the front, shining to indicate the unit is in power, and flashing to indicate unit's working. Invisible when turned off. You really don't need anything more than this. Simple and effective.
Drawback about this model is the lack of a power switch. My old iomega was fitted with one and I find it quite inconvenient to have to unplug the unit from power in order to shut it down everytime. Also the need of separate power supply reduces its portability.
All in all, I've had the unit for a month now and am highly satisfied with it. I am a student and I keep lots of backups of my work, along with plenty of other data, which requires my storage devices with imperative importance to be reliable and store my data securely. So far, Seagate Expansions 1TB provides me with confidence in this respect. I deducted one star for the power switch and separate power supply(though if I could, I would deduct one quarter of a star ). For this price, it's a serious bargain. Go for it.
p.s. If it fails me, I WILL change my review.
Very Highly recommended December 12, 2009 A. Parkinson (UK) I was a little sceptical when I purchased this 1TB external hard drive for under £65. I need not have been. The reviews I read were correct. Its quiet, easy to use and a smaller unit than I expected. Look no further its excellent value for money.
Spot on December 12, 2009 A. Mcinally Ordered this unit to use with Time Machine for my Mac and it is exactly what I needed; not too big (although I wouldn't class it as portable size), not too noisy and at a great price
Additional Hard drive December 12, 2009 Mr. B. B. Calverley (midlands) Ordering was relatively easy - delivery was quick and the drive does the job that I purchased it for. 1 terabyte is so much larger than I imagined and I doubt that I will ever fill it, but better safe than sorry.
